Venice Hotspots: Why Torcello, the Origin of the City, Remains Hidden to Many

Venice – the city of canals, bridges, and endless romance. Anyone who has been there has probably taken photos of St. Mark’s Square, the Rialto Bridge, or a gondola ride – iconic moments that make the city world-famous. But how many of us ask ourselves: Where did it all actually begin? What are the origins of Venice?

This question leads us to a lesser-known place: Torcello, one of the oldest islands in the lagoon, where in 2018 the remains of what are believed to be Venice’s first settlers were discovered. While the tourist crowds rush through Venice’s hotspots from St. Mark’s Square to the Rialto Bridge, this place of the city’s origins often goes unnoticed – not deserted, but much less acknowledged. Why is that?

The Pursuit of Superficiality: A Psychological Perspective

In a world shaped by social media, the pursuit of the “perfect image” often seems to overshadow the curiosity for deeper stories. Psychologically, this phenomenon can be explained by the need for social validation: people share content that is likely to receive the most “likes” and recognition.

A photo on the Rialto Bridge is instantly recognized and appreciated as “Venice.” But a picture of Torcello – a green island with two churches and fewer than 10 inhabitants – tells a subtler story that few understand. And this is exactly where the problem lies: depth requires time, interest, and often knowledge. In a fast-paced world, many prefer quick rewards – a pretty picture rather than an inspiring experience.

The Origins of Venice: Why They Should Matter to All of Us

What do we lose if we only stay on the surface? By overlooking places like Torcello, we miss the opportunity to form a deeper connection with Venice. Torcello was not only a significant site of early settlement but also a symbol of the beginning of something great: a city that grew into one of the world’s greatest cultures, emerging from adversity – water, isolation, and constant change. You can learn more about the latest archaeological findings in my book on Torcello, by the way.

These origins remind us that behind every great success is a story of effort, courage, and adaptability. A visit to Torcello challenges us not only to consume but to reflect – on the transience of power, the importance of community, and the magic of history.

How can we go deeper?

It’s time to rethink our travel behavior. Perhaps we don’t need to check off every highlight and hotspot in Venice, but should more often ask ourselves: What truly makes this place unique? What stories can I find here that aren’t told elsewhere? You might find inspiration for this on my YouTube channel as well.

A visit to Torcello may not go viral immediately, but it stays in the heart for a long time. It gives us the opportunity to touch a part of Venice’s soul and perhaps even take a piece of it home.

Why Depth Requires Courage

The decision to discover places like Torcello is not just geographical, but also psychological. It means choosing inner enrichment over the constant search for external validation. While this may initially seem less exciting, the reward is more lasting: a deep understanding of the origins of a city that is more than just a postcard idyll.

The next time you’re in Venice, ask yourself: Do I want to experience only the facade and the hotspots of Venice, or the story behind them? Perhaps this question will lead you to Torcello – to the roots of Venice and maybe even to your own.

This article has inspired you, and you want to learn more about Torcello. In the first book of the series “Venice in the Rhythm of the Lagoon,” you have a unique opportunity to do so through interactive elements, and it takes you directly to Torcello.
